Our Story

A beloved landmark on Chicago's North Shore

At the Deer Path Inn, we do more than celebrate the rich tradition of English innkeeping. We revel in it. Since the Middle Ages, inns have served as community gathering places where all could find warmth, safety and kinship.

While remaining dedicated to the mannerly traditions of English innkeeping, we’re also committed to providing you with all the modern-day comforts and high-tech essentials you require.

The essence ofPERSONALIZED SERVICE

The one thing even more memorable than the Deer Path Inn’s iconic architecture is our legendary reputation for personal service. It is this unmatched service and the personal attention we give to each of our guests that has kept them coming back for over 85 years.

1860s
The original inn opens

The original Deer Path Inn was built as a home for Colonel William Sage Johnston on the site of an old hunter’s log cabin near a former Indian trail that led to Lake Michigan.

The current inn opens

Designed by architect William C. Jones of the noted firm of Holabird & Root, the new hotel was styled after a 15th century half-timbered and stucco manor house in Chiddingstone, Kent, one of England’s oldest villages.

A fire on the inn’s third floor made national news headlines, and was even featured in a Universal newsreel. It reopened the same year, following extensive repairs.
